Top 5 Wednesday: Nostalgic Ships

I realize that when I do these posts, I never explain the meme. It’s fairly self-explanatory, but perhaps I’m doing newcomers a disservice. Top 5 Wednesday is a weekly book discussion with a new topic every Wednesday. It’s each blogger and BookTuber’s job to pick five book-related things (though you’re welcome to pick things from other media that fit, if necessary) that fit the topic.

This week’s topic is your top five nostalgic ships. These are the first ships that got your heart racing. Let’s take a look back at all the ships (from books and beyond) I used to be do or die for.

  1. Dramione from Harry Potter by JK Rowling

Yup, I was one of those. I honestly don’t even remember why I shipped them, but I do remember writing lots of Dramione fanfiction (when I wasn’t writing self-insert Me x Draco fanfiction). I actually wrote a piece not too long ago about why they’re a bad example of hate-to-love. I’m pretty sure I left them behind when I read The Draco Trilogy (fanfiction Cassandra Clare wrote in college). Then I shipped Draco and Ginny for a while. Now I don’t ship Draco with anyone (except sometimes Harry… depending on my mood).

  1. Stelena & Delena from The Vampire Diaries by LJ Smith

I decided to list both of these ships together since they’re from the same series and share a mutual character. Stefan is soft and romantic. He and Elena have this epic love in which they’d cross the world to save each other. Damon is a broody bad boy. He and Elena are able to understand each other on another level. Plus, they’re just hot together. I could never truly decide which ship I wanted to be endgame. All I know is I haven’t read the series in nearly ten years and only made it to book six (I never got into the show). But I still remember how wrapped up in these ships I was. I don’t regret those days.

  1. Anya and Dimitri from Anastasia

Now this is hate-to-love excellence. Not to mention, they’re practically fated to be together. What are the odds that he worked at the palace when they were kids and then just happened to find her accidentally ten years later?

Also, their banter and sexual tension? Even as a child I could sense that. Plus, they’ve got the royal and the commoner trope. I still swoon over them to this day, honestly.

  1. Jake and Rose from American Dragon: Jake Long

This ship had all the best tropes. Jake and Rose are star-crossed lovers, not realizing until later that they’re actually mortal enemies. They flout convention and magical law for each other. They go from schoolyard crush to epic love story. I was obsessed with them.

Oh yeah, and did I mention they’re only in middle school? That puts a bit of a damper on things from an adult perspective. But they still have one of the most well-written love stories of all time.

  1. Kovu and Kiara from The Lion King 2: Simba’s Pride

Maybe I have a type when it comes to ships. Here we’ve got another Romeo & Juliet-style love story. We’ve got bad-boy-with-a-heart-of-old Kovu and well-meaning and determined Kiara, both of whom want to carve their own path and prove they’re more than what they’re expected to be. (And there’s the fact that “Love Will Find a Way” is one of Disney’s best love duets of all time, but I digress.)
